Vocabulary
Vocabulary homework will continue. Just a reminder that students will be assessed on the meaning of each word in context. Monday they will receive the ten words and their nightly assignment. This is replacing spelling homework.

Math:

Students will learn how to find the perimeter of shapes. Students will apply this understanding to finding the missing side lengthen of a shape and word problems. 

Reading: Students will continue comparing and contrasting stories. This week they will focus on comparing and contrasting stories by the same author. Students will think about how the events in the story are alike and different. Our read alouds this week are Stellaluna and Verdi. 

Grammar: Students will learn how groups of words are similar, but can have slightly different meanings. We will refer to this as shades of meaning. Check out the examples below!

 

Writing: Students will continue to learn how to write and share their opinions. This week students will focus on adding transition words to their writing as well as how they can make their writing more powerful. 

Social Studies: 

Students will continue learning about the early explorers. Students are studying the following explorers: John Cabot, Vasco Nunez de Balbo, Hernando de Soto, Chirstopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, Jacques Cartier. Students are studying the reasons for exploring, accomplishments, and challenges faced by each of these explorers. Students are also learning about examples of cooperation and conflict between the explorers and Native Americans.

Vocabulary Homework Begins:

Starting this week, we will shift our word work focus from spelling to vocabulary. Students will not be assessed on their ability to spell the ten assigned words, but rather on the meaning of each word in the context of a sentence. On Monday, they will receive the ten words, the definitions, and the nightly assignment. Please note, this will replace the spelling homework routine.

Math:

We will be exploring how to find the area of rectangles using square units and the multiplication formula. 

Reading:

Students will learn how to compare and contrast themes, settings, and plots of two stories. Students will apply this understanding to their read aloud: Thundercake.

Grammar:

Students will be comparing adjectives.

For example: fast, faster, fastest

Writing: 

Students will begin the new year writing resolutions for 2020. Additionally, we will continue the work we began before the break on opinion writing.

Social Studies:

We will shift from science to social studies by looking at the Exploration of the New World.

Students will be comparing and contrasting characters, settings, events and themes within texts.

Grammar: 
Students are learning pronoun - antecedent agreement

Writing: 

Students will work on a new persuasive text. Students will be writing a persuasive ad to sell a gingerbread home. 

Science:

Students will prepare for the unit test. A study guide went home last week. Here is a link to a quizlet you can let your student use to practice for the test. Below you will find the map that the quizlet refers to.
